Recycled PET carries a carbon footprint of approximately 0.45 kg CO₂-equivalent per kilogram of material. Virgin PET, produced from fossil feedstocks, generates roughly 2.15 kg CO₂-equivalent per kilogram. That difference — about 1.7 kg CO₂-e per kilogram, or a 79% reduction — is the real climate benefit of recycling PET strapping rather than sending it to landfill.

When PET strapping is diverted from landfill through StrapCycle's chemical recycling pathway, it displaces demand for new virgin resin. The correct comparison is not recycling versus landfill in isolation — it is recycling versus the virgin production that would otherwise occur to meet that demand. On that basis, every tonne of PET strapping we process avoids approximately 1,700 kg (1.7 tonnes) of CO₂-equivalent emissions.
